Ford Mustang Mach-E First Impressions

Yesterday I was given a tour of the new all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E, which was announced last month. It's one of only a few pre-production models doing the rounds and, as such, it was requested that I took no video or photos. Fair enough. The last thing Ford want is people online highlighting slight imperfections or talking about design elements which might not find their way into the finished product. Although you can place an order on the Ford website now, don't expect to take delivery of the car until late next year.

Available as rear wheel or all wheel drive, prices will start at around £40,000 and climb to £58,000. Range is quoted as an impressive (up to) 370 miles. How that plays out in the real world remains to be seen. Performance is stated at an initially disappointing "less than 7 seconds" for the 0-60mph sprint, although we were assured that this is an extremely conservative figure and the final time should be much lower. I suspect it'll need to be if it's to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model 3 (which sits in the same price bracket) and, above all, prove itself worthy of the Mustang moniker.

The name is an odd one for me. It was suggested that 'Mustang' found its way onto this vehicle because of its performance credentials, but it seems weird seeing the iconic muscle car name attached to an electric SUV. That aside, the car itself looks good in the flesh - certainly better than in the pictures, I think. The removal of the front grill (not required as there's no engine to keep cool) looks a bit strange and I have the feeling it'll lead to some healthy sales of paint touch-up sticks from irritating, and unavoidable, stone chips. The familiar galloping horse sits on the front of the car and, behind that, the creased bonnet is one attractive element which fails to stand out in the released photos.

At the rear of the car you can see the styling cues taken from its coupe stable-mate, in the form of the very distinctive lights (and another galloping horse badge). The way the two tone roof sweeps down helps to lend the impression that this is a sleek sports car rather than a boxy SUV and it works well. As you'd expect, there appeared to be plenty of storage space. A decent sized boot is accompanied by a "front trunk", in the space where the engine would be in a traditional car. In a car like this, the batteries are kept low in the chassis to keep the centre of gravity down and weight distribution as ideal as possible.

When I drove a V8 Mustang I was fairly critical of the interior. Elements of it felt a bit cheap and that's probably because they are. You can't expect to pay Mustang money for a honking great V8 muscle car and get top-end German build materials included in the mix. If anything, Ford should be congratulated for ensuring the budget is spent on the bits which matter most: those which directly affect driving enjoyment. Anyway, the interior on this model looks a step up. The materials and equipment look impressive, and the obligatory huge (15.5 inch) screen doesn't look as obtrusive as it does in many electric cars. I'd certainly like to hear the huge B&O soundbar which appears to run across the entirety of the dashboard...

In summary, I went to see this new Mustang with mixed feelings. I'm not an SUV fan and, although it might be the future, I'm not fully sold on electric cars yet. However, what I saw looked impressive. Ford have produced an attractive and practical car, which should provide good range and performance, at a competitive price. You can argue whether it deserves to wear the Mustang badge, but I'll certainly be interested in taking one for a spin once they're available.

Movie and TV Cars (Part 2)

Continuing from part one, here's my continued look at some of the coolest and most iconic cars found on film. Come with me as I look at more of the cinematic vehicles which have captured the hearts of people over the years.

Ghostbusters

You’d hardly call the 1959 Cadillac/hearse combination, generally referred to as Ecto-1, a classic car. Indeed, the vehicle itself broke down on Brooklyn Bridge during the filming of the sequel, landing the filmmakers with a fine from the NYPD. It is, however, up there with the most recognisable vehicles in cinema history and it being a bit odd, a bit old and broken, and looking like it’ll fall to pieces at any second is what helps make it cool. It’s an underdog and everyone loves an underdog.

I Bought a Mazda MX5 30th Anniversary Edition

I have an new car and it's orange. Very orange. This model celebrates 30 years of the Mazda MX-5 and is available in very limited numbers. Worldwide, there are 3,000 with 550 coming to the UK. Of those, 370 are of the traditional soft top variety and 180 are the retractable hardtop model. Many arrived in the UK at the wrong time of year - the end of summer, when the weather turns wet and miserable!

Riding to Sweden and Norway

Three of us recently rode to Lillehammer (about a hundred miles north of Oslo) in Norway. I was riding my Ducati Multistrada from Oxfordshire in England while Matt (on his Triumph Tiger XC) and Bob (on his Yamaha MT-09 Tracer) were riding from the Isle of Man. Taking different ferries, we met near Rotterdam in the Netherlands, before blasting across Germany and catching the ferry to Gothenburg and then riding north. From there the fun began with Sweden and Norway's excellent roads: well maintained, smooth, quiet and twisty.

Volvo Museum, Gothenburg

On our recent tour of Sweden and Norway we stopped off at the Volvo Museum while we were in Gothenburg. Inside they have their models dating from the 1920s through to today's cars, trucks, buses, racing cars and concept vehicles which didn't make production.

Car and Motorcycle Sound Compilation

If there's one reason which is stopping me jumping aboard the electric car revolution, it's the lack of aural drama. I love the sound of a big V8, or a screaming motorcycle engine. With that in mind, and an ever-growing collection of video footage in my archives, I decided to pull together a video encompassing some of the best examples I've recorded over the last year or so. So, if you want to hear what a couple of V12 Lamborghini Diablos and a Ferrari F12 sound like when they're attacking their rev limiters in unison sounds like, then look no further. On the two wheeled front, prepare to be assaulted by the aggressive roar of Isle of Man TT bikes, accelerating flat out at around 180mph. You'll find that, and more, in the video below. Turn up your speakers, and enjoy.

Supercar Fest 2019

Supercar Fest is a new event for 2019 and, as well as promising to have some great cars on display, it was also held on a hill climb course. The Shelsley Walsh track was first used in 1905 and extended to just over 0.5 miles in length two years later, with a big 100m rise in elevation over that length.

In the video and gallery below you'll see some rare and wonderful cars take to that climb.

Pre ’50 American Auto Club Rally of the Giants 2019 (Video and Gallery)

The American Auto Club's Rally of the Giants saw a great selection of American cars descend on Blenheim Palace. The event provided plethora of styles and ages; some getting on for a hundred years old and others much more modern.

Red Bull Soapbox Race, London 2019 (Video)

Red Bull take their Soapbox Race around various cities, world wide, annually. It returned to Alexandra Palace in London, during a day of great weather, for madcap action, drama and crashes.

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019 (Video and Gallery)

The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed event, held on the English south coast, sees a hugely eclectic mix of vehicles come together for the four day event. Ultra modern hypercars mix with classics of yesteryear; many of them taking to the hill climb circuit in order to entertain the crowd (and pull them away from the gin bars and elaborate manufacturer's stands).

Santa Pod - The Fast Show Reloaded 2019 (Video and Gallery)

The Fast Show Reloaded, at Santa Pod, followed on from The Fast Show earlier in the year (you can find the gallery and video from that event here). It promised lots of stunts, (including cars, motorcycles and a quad) as well as plenty of modified show cars and drag strip racing.

The Fireforce 5 jet car was in attendance, hitting an incredible 292mph over the standing quarter of a mile. See all the highlights in the video below, together with some photos from a fun day.

Cassington Bike Night 2019 (Video and Gallery)

For one day each summer, thousands of motorcycles descend on a small Oxfordshire village for Cassington Bike Night. Below is a highlights video of the some of the machines in attendance, and some pictures.

Stand-out highlight for me was the Ducati Desmosedici (pictured right, and seen pulling away in the video). Designed as MotoGP replica for the road, they're very rare and very, very expensive!

Le Mans 24 Hour Racing and Behind the Scenes

Every year a wealth of racing teams descend on the French town of Le Mans for arguably the most prestigious endurance motor racing event in the world. 2019 was the 87th time the race had been run and, together with a group of friends, we undertook the 425 drive into France in a convoy of my BMW M4, a Mercedes C63 Estate and a Mercedes C63 S.

Below is a highlights video and gallery, aiming to more capture the atmosphere of the event rather than just the racing (huge fences don't do much for the look of video!).

Isle of Man TT 2019 Racing and Behind the Scenes

The Isle of Man TT is a collection of motorcycle (and sidecar) road races which traditionally take place in early June each year. The fearsome 37.37 mile road circuit has claimed many lives over the years and it's difficult to not be in awe of the riders who reach speeds of 200mph, inches away from walls, lampposts, house, kerbs and many other things which could prove lethal with the slightest mistake or mechanical issue.

Below is a highlights video I took during practice/qualifying week. Unfortunately the weather was so poor that virtually all the sessions were cancelled, but at least we got to see some action. I can't complain too much - it was my fourth trip and the weather was great on the first three.

Isle of Man TT Circuit Laps (Car and Bike)

Every year, for two weeks, the Isle of Man is taken over by the TT; a racing event which dates back to 1907. The 37.37 mile circuit stretches in a loop around the island, utilising public roads which are closed for the event. Probably the most famous section is the mountain - a fast, flowing section at high altitude which has no speed limit even outside the event. During the racing fortnight it's made into a one-way system, allowing members of the public (like me) to use both sides of the road. Below are a couple of videos on my first trips across the mountain, one in a car and one on a bike.

Abingdon Air and Country Show (with Classic Cars and Military Vehicles). Video and Gallery.

Below you'll find my highlights from the Abingdon Air and Country show, featuring WWII Spitfires and Hurricanes, Argus KK527, North American NA-64 Yale, P-51 Mustang, Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, Gazelles, Yakovlev YAK-3, the Renegades Parachute Team, AeroSuperBatics Wingwalkers and more.

Also in attendance were a large number of military vehicles and classic cars, a kids' motorcycle display team (where the youngest boy is just four years old!) and even a single seat race car.

Isle of Man TT Recap

The 2019 Isle of Man TT races are fast approaching. I'll be there, for the first time in a few years, having visited the island for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 races, and I cannot wait. If you're in any way into motorsport it's a pilgrimage you must make at some point in your life.

To get us excited in the countdown to this year's event, here's a short video I put together from footage I'd taken on my previous trips along with some photos.

Dubai Dune Buggies and the Burj Khalifa (Video and Gallery)

On my recent trip to Dubai I drove a buggy out into the dunes. Rear wheel drive, powered by a 2.0 litre Toyota engine, it was a bit ragged on occasion! Also in the video and pictures below I've included some of the sights and sounds at the world's tallest building - the Burj Khalifa, including the view from the highest observation deck... a crazy 555m above ground!

Dubai Car Spotting (Video and Gallery)

It's no secret that Dubai is home to some very expensive cars. On a recent trip, I ensured I had a camera with me at all times in order to capture some of the crazy cars seen cruising the streets. I wasn't disappointed: sports cars, super cars and luxury cars are everywhere.

While I captured a few below (and more in the video), there were countless more that I missed. There comes a point where you hear the familiar growl of a G63's thunderous V8 and shrug, for it'll be just one of the huge number that you're likely to see on any given day. Eat your heard out Monaco; on the posing stakes you have much to learn.

The Tuk Tuks of Mumbai (Video and Gallery)

I recently spent some time India, so took the opportunity to document a ride in a Tuk Tuk taxi (or, more accurately, an "auto rikshaw"). Check out the video below to see how it went.

Also, on the roads of Mumbai, I learned the following about local road craft:

1. Driving on the correct side of the road is only necessary if it doesn't delay you.
2. Red lights mean stop... unless you don't want to, or you feel that you've waited long enough.
3. You drive a Tuk Tuk at night? Lights are optional.
4. Bumpers are for just that: bumping into things.
5. People crash into everything... except very expensive looking Mercedes or Range Rovers, which are either supplied with magical shields or the fear of financial ruin for anyone who dares sneeze on them.
6. Everything which isn't a Mercedes or Range Rover looks like it's been through three seasons of banger car racing.
7. Lanes are for rough guidance and you should think nothing of stuffing three vehicles into each one.
8. Horns are good. Use them. Always.

A brief visit to Caffeine & Machine to check out why it's become so popular with petrol-heads. In summary, I liked what I saw (and ate!) and will be back at a later, weekend date to get a better feeling for the venue and variety of cars in attendance.

Lancia Delta Integrale: Drive and Thoughts

I recently had the chance to take a ten minute drive in a Lancia Delta Integrale (under strict instructions to behave, given the cameras I had in the car). I've put some of the footage in this video, together with my thoughts on the rally legend.

It's often said that you shouldn't meet your heroes and, in that regard, the first time I drove a much-coveted Ford Mustang I was left severely underwhelmed. How would the 29 year old Lancia fare?

MCN London Motorcycle Show 2019 (Video and Gallery)

Here's a highlights video and some pictures from this weekend's MCN London Motorcycle Show. I dived in late in the day, after visiting the Classic Car Show (being held in halls opposite at ExCel), so it was pretty quiet. Whilst content was a little thin on the ground, it was great to see some of my favourite old (and rare) sportsbikes for sale, like the Honda RC45, NR750 and the Yamaha R7.

BMW M5 Review

Recently, I drove a current model F90 BMW M5. I’d never driven any iteration of the M5 before and, coming from an M4, I was curious how the extra bulk and grunt was managed and whether the sum of the parts would result in a unmanageable mess. Of course, that was never going to be the case; the reviews for the new M5 are positive across the board with four and five star ratings aplenty.

Techy bits out of the way. Like its predecessor, the M5 has a 4.4 litre twin-turbocharged V8 but it now produces a huge 592bhp (up from 553bhp in the previous model), while torque climbs 52lb ft to 553lb ft. 0-62mph is dispatched in just 3.4 seconds thanks, in part, to a four-wheel drive system (a first in an M car). Top speed is limited to the German norm of 155mph but can be raised to 190mph. Opt for the Competition model and power climbs to 617bhp, torque remains the same and the 0-62 sprint drops by 0.1 seconds. The £6,500 premium over the standard model also gains you different wheels, the M Performance exhaust, a smattering external high-gloss black parts and 7mm lower suspension.

First impressions when slipping behind the wheel were that it is a nice place to be. The seats are large, hugging and deserving of those to be found in an M car. The new digital dash is immediately noticeable with good contrast and, seemingly, fast reaction to needle changes on the dials. The cabin appeared conspicuously larger than my M4’s, but not by a huge margin. Indeed, once moving, the car itself didn’t seem too much bigger at all to manoeuvre. Once rolling it also hides its weight well, resulting in it being surprisingly eager to change direction. 40kg has apparently been shaved from the older model, but this is still a car knocking on the door of two tonnes.

Probably the thing which most surprised me was the car’s ability to accelerate in a relatively unfussed manner. Rather than being subjected to savage power, as I’d expected, acceleration is something that just kind of happens… while taking you along for the ride. Dials climb quickly (very quickly), speed increases and things get closer very fast but there’s little of the visceral engagement which is provided by my M4. I suspect this is partly due to the slightly different target markets, resulting in a more subtle ride likely favoured by the car’s intended audience.

My fairly short drive didn’t provide enough time to fully test the car’s capabilities but I can attest that the four wheel system coped superbly well on a gravel-strewn, wet road, asserting no hint that loss of traction was imminent. It would have been an altogether different story in my skittish M4. Of course, many would lament the loss of rear wheel drive and purists would be frothing at the mouth. Fortunately, the M5 provides the ability to switch to rear drive; a set-up which seems ideal to me. There have been many moments, through the winter, where I’ve just wanted my car to grip. Driving to work at 6am in the rain, I have no interest in entering drift competitions when attempting to make a spirited exit from a roundabout.

Overall, I was left with the impression that this M5 is a supremely capable vehicle. It’s plush and comfortable, very well specced and extremely fast. That slight detachment of engagement in its performance would possibly be enough to discourage me though, but I might view that situation very differently in a few years. Also, the price tag for the Competition is £97,925 without options, which is a serious chunk of cash. That said, once inside the car I can find very little to fault with it and that must count for a lot.

Exploring Iceland By Car (Video and Gallery)

Taking advantage of some favourable flight prices I headed to Iceland recently, hired a car and set about exploring some of the island. I'd been once before, ten years ago, and harboured fond memories of the place and this trip re-enforced them. I'll even forgive them for charging £9 for a pint of beer...

The Dacia Duster we received as a hire car wouldn't have been my first choice but, despite my complaints in the video below, it performed well enough. I certainly gained more respect for it when I returned to the UK and discovered that its RRP is £9,995. You can't buy much at all for that money, so it offsets my grumbles somewhat. Anyway, a thoroughly enjoyable trip was had and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone as a destination offering something a little different from the norm.

Classic and Modern BMW Walk Around (Video and Gallery)

Today was that dreaded time when my car needed servicing, so I undertook the tedious drive to Cotswold Cheltenham BMW (safe in the knowledge that at least I'd have some great cars to gawp at once I arrived).

Sure enough, once I'd handed my car over for some bank-balance-emptying spark plugs, oil and various checkups, I was rewarded with a fine selection of vehicles check out while I waited.

Just 30 BMW M4 GTS cars made it to the UK, and two of them are here, one white, one black; both stunning. An immaculately restored 1974 3.0 CSL caught my attention as soon as I walked in, followed by the equally tidy 1973 2002. On the classic front there was also a 1989 635csi with just 13,000 miles on it, next to a very distinctive 840ci. Check out the video and gallery below.

Driving the Swiss Alps

Back in 2013 I joined a road trip tour which took us through France and Germany, down to the Alps in Switzerland and northern Italy.

Travelling in a friend's E90 model BMW M3 (pictured), we covered more than 2,000 miles in five days. Many of those miles were up and down mountains, hugging switchbacks roads and trying not to drive over the edge.

Although the trip took place a long time before I'd even considered creating this site, I stumbled across some old footage and pulled it together in the video which you'll find below. I hope you enjoy it and find the scenery as breathtaking as I do!

Movie and TV Cars (Part 1)

As well as loving cars and motorcycles, I’m also a massive film fan. This means that occasionally I get the opportunity to watch as my favourite screen-bound hero slips behind the wheel of fantasy exotica. Sometimes it’s completely unexpected and catches you off-guard, like when John Travolta pulls out the keys to a TVR Tuscan in 'Swordfish'. This is a car which is likely to be obscure to the average cinema goer, but instantly evokes feelings of passion and raw speed in me. Such moments can be ruined though. In this case it was in the subsequent pursuit where several unremarkable SUVs manage to keep pace with the lightweight British powerhouse.

It’s a risky business, mixing passions across different fields. Many films attempt it, with varying degrees of success. Some have catapulted vehicles to legendary status, whereas others have fallen completely flat. Let’s take a look at a few of the film and TV vehicles which have stood the test of time.

Commuting Into London And The Ace Cafe Bike Night

My normal commute transport into London each day is a combination of car and coach (and sometimes only car). It's rarely by motorcycle and that's because it's such a soul destroying route. I join the A40 a couple of miles from my house. After 24 miles it turns into the M40 and I sit on the motorway for 33 miles before it becomes the A40 again. 13 miles later, I turn off and I'm less than a mile from work. 99% of the commute is effectively one road with as little variation and excitement as you might imagine. It's quicker on the bike, sure, but it's a boring ride and I don't fancy putting 1,400 miles a month on my Ducati.

Yesterday, however, I braved the rain and lunatic bike couriers because I thought I'd head over to the Ace Cafe after work for their Bike Night. Below is the video I shot from my two camera set-up and some pictures I took in the evening.

BMW M4 Early Morning Countryside Drive

Living on the edge of the Cotswolds in Oxfordshire means I'm lucky enough to be on the doorstep of some lovely countryside scenery and good roads. Most of the time though, these roads are snarled up with traffic rendering any potential enjoyment unattainable while you sit behind a long, snaking queue of traffic disappearing over the horizon.

One advantage of kids is that it ensures you're up early in the morning. Taking advantage of this fact on a Sunday morning, I left the kids in the capable hands of my wife, grabbed some cameras, my car keys and headed for the hills. It turns out, unsurprisingly, that 9am on a Sunday is much quieter than most other times of the week (even if it is a bit cold and damp, Mid-January). The video below features some of the highlights from a pleasant drive before heading home for a late breakfast.

Mercedes C63S Top Speed Run

Have you ever wondered what driving flat out on the motorway looks like? In the summer of 2017 my friend and I were in Germany, on the unrestricted Autobahn, so it seemed like the ideal opportunity to test out the top speed of his relatively new Mercedes C63S.

With a 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine, the car produces 503bhp. In theory the car is limited to a top speed of 155mph, although as you'll see, the speedo shows more than that. However, I've experienced how they generally over-read in the past and, without a GPS to confirm the true speed, I'm going to assume it's somewhere around the 155-160mph mark.

Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble, January 2019

A couple of times a year Bicester Heritage hosts Sunday Scramble, a morning display of a stunning and eclectic mix of cars from all types, ages and manufacturers. I took a trip down there for the first meeting of 2019, grabbed some video footage (including some of my drive there and back in the M4) and many photos.

The next event is in April, and you can find more details on the Bicester Heritage website. If you haven't been before and like the look of what you see below, then I highly recommend you take the time to check it out.
