Armoured Vehicle, Ambulance and Military Truck Driving

My wife bought me a driving experience for my birthday and last weekend I was let loose in a Spartan armoured personnel carrier, a Dennis Sabre fire engine and a Leyland 4-tonne army truck. The Spartan was fun to drive (and pretty quick too). I'd enjoy trying that out on some properly rough terrain (preferably without being shot at). The fire engine was surprising. Again, it was pretty quick for its size and (with rear wheel steering) it's surprisingly manoeuvrable with an incredibly tight turning circle. I even managed to parallel park it without killing the cone markers...

The Leyland was pretty much what I expected. I've spent some time in the back of these things and I remember the sharp brakes sending unsuspecting people flying, so the grabby brakes were no surprise. Good levels of grip though. All in all, it was a fun (and informative) couple of hours!

Car Stunts and Monster Trucks: California Motor Show

Here's a brief highlights video from a car stunt show which I attended with my son, on a whim, while on holiday in Spain. Apologies for the phone camera quality!

Anyway, it was a decent show and you'll see stunts from cars, quads and monster trucks.

Caffeine and Machine 5th Birthday - 25th October 2023

Caffeine and Machine ran a number of events for their fifth birthday week, of which this was one. A good turnout of cars braved the chilly (but thankfully dry) October weather ensuring that there was surely something to interest anyone.

My highlights video and gallery is below.

Lakeside Motor Museum

On a family weekend in the Lake District (north west England) we made an impromptu stop at the Lakeside Motor Museum. It turned out to be a diversion well worth taking.

There's a good variety of vehicles displayed, from vintage cars and vans through to rare sports cars and a stand dedicated to Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness.

There's also a room dedicated to Donald and Malcolm Campbell and their land speed record attempts and vehicles.

Limitless Club Meet - Kingsley Café 8th October 2023

I stopped by Kingsley Café (in Eynsham, west of Oxford) while heading home from Bicester Heritage's Sunday Scramble show. Limitless were holding a car club meeting there and, although I dropped in many hours after it had started (when, I suspect most people had left) there were still a few interesting cars hanging around.

Bicester Heritage - Sunday Scramble October 2023

Another excellent Sunday Scramble in Bicester (although the unseasonably warm October weather certainly helped!). There was plenty to see and many interesting vehicles were in attendance.

Check out the highlights video below and the gallery of pictures after.

Hardknott Pass, Lake District - Drone and In Car Footage

Following my recent video from Honister Pass, this one shows Hardknott Pass (also in the Lake District, a few miles south of Scaffell Pike - England's tallest mountain). Hardknott is a lot less accessible, with the uneven and undulating road (and its very poor surface quality) causing my car a couple of traction and clearance issues. That said, the view from the top at sun rise was stunning! This video starts with some drone fly overs, showing the route from above, before switching to in car footage. Below the video are some photos from along the route, including that sun rise.

Honister Pass, Lake District - Drone and In Car Footage

A showcase of the Honister Pass in the Lake District, north west England. The video commences with a short drone flight, the video moves in-car so that you can see exactly what it's like to travel across this picturesque mountain pass. Also, you'll find a few pictures after the video.

Black Swan Classic Car & Motorcycle Breakfast Meet - 13th August 2023

A Sunday morning trip out to The Black Swan in Ockham for their monthly car meeting. A nice variety of vehicles were in attendance and their breakfast is an effective hangover cure!

Banger Racing at Standlake Arena - 23rd July 2023

A first time visit to watch banger racing with my son at Standlake Arena in Oxfordshire. It was refreshingly relaxed when compared with professional racing, with open access to the pits and near constant, action packed, racing due to the fast turnarounds. Also, you have 5 or 6 hours of racing on offer which ends up resulting in good value for money. My 7-year old son had a great time.

I only had my phone with me, but I grabbed some photos (shown below).

Monster Jam London 2023 - Freestyle and Race

A quick video from Monster Jam 2023 at London Stadium on Saturday 15th July 2023. It shows Max-D's freestyle run and Thor versus Grave Digger head-to-head race.

The video was taken with my phone, as cameras were not allowed.

Bloxham Steam and Country Fair 2023

This is a annual show which I've never visited before but my family and I decided it might make for a nice day out, on a late June sunny Sunday. I must say I was left pleasantly surprised by the numbers of vehicles on display (and the variety). From the show's name alone you'd expect a good selection of steam engines and that was the case, but there were also a large number of military vehicles, trucks, motorcycles and classic cars in attendance. Well worth a day out!

Grass Track Racing at Dalton Barracks - 30th April 2023

A fun day out watching some grass track racing at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon. There was some good, close racing and lots of flying mud. The rain just about managed to stay away too, which is always a bonus.

Goodbye MX-5

With the arrival of my Civic Type-R it's time to say goodbye to my trusty Mazda MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition. I've owned it from new and, in that three and a half years, it's been a brilliant little car. When I sold my BMW M4 I wanted something very different, and it was certainly that. Once you drive one it's difficult not to like them; small, light, excellent weight distribution, rear wheel drive and loads of driving feedback. What's not to love?

The orange paint scheme might not be to everyone's liking but, with only 3,000 worldwide (of which 550 came to the UK), it was never going to be a common sight. The excellent upgraded Brembo brakes, Recaro seats, engraved forged alloys and alcantara interior meant that it was more than just a colour change for the limited edition car. So, as one driving chapter closes, I move onto a new one and raise a glass to the plucky little underdog from Japan that more than paid for itself with the smiles it provided.

Caffeine & Machine - 18th March 2023

My first trip of the year to Caffeine & Machine to see what interesting vehicles might be in attendance (and as an excuse to put some miles on my new Type-R and get further through the running in period). Check out the gallery below.

2023 Honda Civic Type-R (FL5) Collection and Initial Impressions

A short collection video of my new Honda Civic Type-R (FL5 model) and some initial thoughts (remembering that I'd only driven it 100 miles and the weather was terrible!). In short: I'm very impressed already (especially with the seats and the gear change!). Once I've run it in I'll be back to report on the car as a whole.

The Driver (1978)

The '70s saw some great car chases captured for film, utilising some very cool vehicles. A non-exhaustive list of films for petrolheads to check out would include Vanishing Point (1971), Gone in 60 Seconds (1974), The Getaway (1972), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), The French Connection (1971) and, if you want to go back a couple of more years, 1968's Bullitt. One film which has evaded me though, up until now, is The Driver from 1978.

I rectified that last night and was treated to a taut crime thriller which simply made me kick myself for not hunting it down sooner. Directed by Walter Hill (who also made The Warriors, Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs. and produced the Alien films, amongst others) there is no fat in this film. It's dialogue light and action heavy and, coming in at 91 minutes, it's a far cry from some of the cumbersome three hour marathons which are churned out today. The car chases are excellent and easily stand up to anything produced today. They are, to coin a phrase, worth the price of the entry ticket alone.

If, like me, you're an avid film fan you'll be pleased to note that it's just been remastered in 4K. It was poorly received at the time but has gone on to gain something of a cult status, being praised by the likes of Tarantino and Edgar Wright (who was heavily influenced by it when making Baby Driver).

No film of this type would be complete without some notable vehicles so I've grabbed a few stills from the Internet Movies Cars Database and stitched them together. On display is a 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 S, a 1977 Pontiac Firebird, a 1965 Ford Mustang, a 1973 Chevrolet C-10 and a 1974 For Galaxie 500.
